So long you have heard, “Afghanistan’s decade long war” plastered over the titles of countless news entities. The country is continuously perceived and showcased as a failed state with splurging amounts of terrorists continuing to spill the blood of Afghans no matter age, gender or ethnic group. It is solely termed with dark connotations that give out a misconception of Afghanistan to the world. Offended by this constant entitlement, I take a stance on delivering a true representation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. To clarify, the shadowed other side of Afghanistan. Its true vibrancy and richness of culture has been hidden in the dark for years
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Safa Nabizada and I am an Afghan-American. Throughout my childhood, head on my mother’s lap, my ears would admire the hour long stories of her life in Kabul that she would allocate to my siblings and I. The stories that I hold close to me and cherish so deeply till this day. The words who have shaped who I am today and will be in the future. Traveling back thirteen years ago, was when little Safa first came in contact with the crispy and refreshing breeze of her homeland. It is accurate to say that a piece of my heart has been left in Afghanistan. Now, here I am. A girl whose thoughts are constantly drifting to dreams bigger than herself for her country.
Amidst all this chaos in a male dominated country, with both genders having polarizing views, I aim to continue the fight towards equality for all. During this new stage of rebirth for the nation, it is crucial to further extend the active involvement of females in the workforce whether it is their desire to build their own business, share their political perspective, or voice the weak.
As Rumi once said, “It is love that brings happiness to people. It is love that gives joy to happiness.” Now is the time to join me in my journey of fighting hatred with love.
